Sarah Dillon
Human Resources Director, Personnel Services Center
College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences
Why are you running for a position on the Staff Assembly Board?
Our campus' sense of community is strong and we are so committed to the students we serve. Staff Assembly is a great way to give back to that community through fun events, professional development, and advocating for greater representation and equity. I have loved being part of Staff Assembly the past several years and getting to meet people from all across campus and I'm excited for the opportunity to continue on the board.
If elected, what are your plans for the position(s) for which you are running?
As Vice President/President Elect, I would work hard to provide support to all of the other board members while learning all of the responsibilities of the President. I want to make sure everyone has what they need to be successful on Staff Assembly. As well, I would seek opportunities to hear from the larger staff community to better advocate and represent our interests when meeting with leadership. We have a diverse community that may want or need different things so I want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to speak up and be heard.
What do you think Staff Assembly needs to prioritize in 2025-26?
There is a lot happening right now, both on our campus, across the UC system, and on a broader scale. Staff Assembly should focus on supporting our staff by helping them grow and advance in their careers while also safeguarding their work/life balance. Additionally, we must continue to advocate for our staff with campus leadership and the larger UC system. While we continue to offer the fun events for staff that we all know and love, we should also dedicate attention to areas that can make a lasting impact on the overall staff experience by connecting more with different groups across campus.

Shawn Christianson
Executive Assistant Specialist, Undergraduate Medical Education
School of Medicine
Why are you running for a position on the Staff Assembly Board?
I was honored to be nominated by a colleague who recognized my past experiences and contributions in event planning and engagement. They felt that my skills could benefit the Staff Assembly and that this role would allow me to continue doing what I love—creating meaningful and impactful events that bring people together. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to the Staff Assembly Board, learn from past successes, and help enhance future events that foster a stronger sense of community and connection among staff.
If elected, what are your plans for the position(s) for which you are running?
If elected, my goal is to bring my event planning expertise to the structure of Staff Assembly events, enhancing and elevating the experiences offered to our staff community. I plan to integrate my skills with the established goals of the Staff Assembly while also exploring new and innovative approaches tailored to this specific group. By learning from past successes and incorporating fresh ideas, I aim to create dynamic and engaging events that foster connection, recognition, and a strong sense of community among staff members.
What do you think Staff Assembly needs to prioritize in 2025-26?
Given the current social and political climate, I believe Staff Assembly should focus on providing meaningful support and assistance opportunities for staff and their families during these challenging times. Prioritizing resources, well-being initiatives, and professional development can make a significant impact on our staff community. Additionally, I would love to see more opportunities for cross-campus engagement, such as a campus-wide 5K. This type of event would encourage collaboration between departments that may not typically interact—such as SOM and ENG or UGA and SOM GME—helping to break down silos and strengthen our sense of community. To further support our local economy and encourage campus engagement, we could also partner with local businesses to provide prizes, such as gift baskets or gift cards, for event participants. This not only rewards staff for their participation but also builds stronger connections between UCR and the surrounding community. By focusing on support, engagement, and community-building, Staff Assembly can continue to create meaningful experiences that benefit staff both personally and professionally.
Biography
My journey with UC Riverside began in 2000, when I worked in Undergraduate Admissions processing transfer applications. During this time, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Robert Penman, then the Event Coordinator for Undergraduate Recruitment, assisting with large-scale events for prospective students and their families. This experience led me to oversee a team of 60+ student employees under Robert’s direction. Today, he serves as the Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions at UC Davis. In 2012, I transitioned to a role with the City of West Hollywood as an Events Technician Specialist. There, I gained invaluable experience in event planning and community engagement—coordinating everything from intimate gatherings with coffee and pastries to high-profile city events, such as the LA Pride Festival building out two tent interactive booths, and Mayoral instillations where I facilitated real-time photo opportunities with the Mayor and City Council members. My passion for event coordination extends beyond my professional roles. As a longtime volunteer with the Sunset Music Festival and other community initiatives, I built meaningful connections that ultimately led to my position with the City of West Hollywood. Additionally, I served as the West Coast Coordinator for Fan Band Relations for the band Thirty Seconds to Mars and the music label EMI Virgin Records, working on fan engagement and event planning for various band initiatives. Throughout my career, I have honed the ability to connect with people, identify their strengths, and place them in roles that maximize both their potential and the success of an event. I thrive in dynamic environments where collaboration and creativity drive memorable experiences. I sincerely appreciate the committee’s consideration of my application. It would be an honor to serve as the next Director of Events on the Staff Assembly Executive Board for the 2025–2026 year.

Biography
I was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where I developed a strong sense of loyalty, independence, determination, and resilience. At the age of fourteen, I began working at Science Museum Oklahoma, facilitating summer camps for children and fostering a love for learning through engaging, hands-on activities. This experience ignited my passion for event planning, community involvement, and mentoring the next generation. As I embarked on my higher education journey, I faced new challenges that tested my resilience. Despite these obstacles, my love for working with youth kept me motivated. Determined to achieve a balanced work-life integration, I navigated through hardships and learned to adapt to what worked best for me. In 2014, I moved to Southern California, where I found my peace at Friendship Baptist Church. While putting myself through school, I worked two jobs, believing firmly that any young woman can succeed with the right mindset and attitude. This growth in mental strength was pivotal, and in 2017, I proudly earned my Associate’s Degree from Mt. San Jacinto College. In 2018, I joined Vital Link as a Program Coordinator, where I quickly advanced to Program Manager within two years. At Vital Link, I coordinated hands-on events and industry tours for high school and college students, guiding them as they moved from nervous beginners to confident, career-driven individuals. Witnessing their growth was an incredibly rewarding experience, reaffirming my passion for empowering youth. The year 2020 kept me focused on my long-term goals. I quietly continued my education and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree from American Intercontinental University. By August 2023, I also earned an Executive Master’s of Business Administration, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Texas Southern University. Throughout my journey, my continuous interest in event planning and business analytics has been a driving force in both my personal and professional growth. These skills have not only shaped my career but have also equipped me to make a positive impact on those around me.
